The 2017 edition of the Copenhagen World Music Festival was held between 7 and 9 September. The focus was on Europe’s diversity and cultural exchange and the guests included teams from India, Russia, the Baltics, China, Cuba, Brazil and Morocco. Folks of Bengal, an initiative of banglanatak dot com, represented India. It was led by Debalina Bhowmik, a classical music trained folk singer who has performed at several music festivals worldwide. The other members included Babu Fakir, Gopi Khyapa, Mohan Tanti (flute) and Rana Mondal (percussion). The band took the audience on a journey through Bengal’s musical diversity and the richness of its cultural heritage, pivoting around the music of the Baul-Fakirs. Artists engaged in the traditional art of scroll painting called Patachitra, the weaving crafts of Kantha and Madur, and the ancient craft of metal casting known as Dokra were also part of the team.

A Folks of Bengal led by Debalina Bhowmick performed at Urkult festival held in north Sweden between 3 and 5 August, 2017. The audience response was amazing and reinvigorating! Swedish Radio broadcast the programme live for 25 minutes!

‘Colours of Ostrava’ in the Czech Republic is one of the biggest music festivals in Europe. ‘Bauls: Soul of Bengal’ – an initiative of banglanatak dot com MusiCal, represented by Bhajan Das Bairagya, Debalina Bhowmick, Sumanta Das Baul, Saurav Moni, Mohan Tati and Khokan Das – performed at the festival held between 20 July and 22 July, 2017.

A five-member Folks of Bengal team, led by Debalina Bhowmick, participated in the world famous Ethno Krakow Crossroad music festival in Poland from 5-8 July, 2017. Over 100 musicians from four continents performed in 20 concerts at special venues, including the Church of St Catherine of Alexandria, Galicia Jewish Museum, Ethnographic Museum, the Krakow clubs Alchemia and Strefa, and an open air stage at Wolnica Square. Ours was the last show at Wolnica Square on the night of 8 July. Our theme was ‘Music for Love and Peace’. Debalina rendered ‘Kichudin mone mone’, a love song for lord Krishna, and ‘Gour Bandana’. Rabi Das Baul and Anurup Mallik presented Lalan Fakir and Durbin Shah’s compositions. Anurup sang a Jhumur song with an experimental soundscape. Arpan Thakur Chakraborty, in Dotara, and Sandip Bag, in Tabla, presented the instrumental. We ended with Bhaba Pagla’s ‘Ekhono sei Brindabone’.

WOMEX, an international networking platform for the world music industry was held from Oct 19-Oct 23, 2016 in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. This international fair brings together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music and also includes concerts, conferences and documentary films. This year, TourEast debuted at the festival to promote the music and culture of Bengal.

The festival presents a tropical blend of adventurous music from all parts of the globe rooted in Dutch soil: arabicana, latin, salsa, tango, kaseko, ethio-pop, jazz cross-overs, reggae, afrobeat & more. Our Founder Director, Mr. Amitava Bhattacharya and Debalina Bhowmick, Coordinator of MusiCal participated at the Dutch Delta Sounds Festival held on 7-8 September,2016. Mr. Bhattacharyya also delivered the keynote address 'From Delta to Delta: Magic in Roots' at Dutch Delta Sounds.
